Douglas Fir Building Materials

Although it is neither a genuine fir, pine, or spruce, Douglas fir is the most common softwood species in North America. It grows in great abundance in the woods along the Pacific Northwest coast, where some of the strictest environmental regulations in the world to preserve watersheds, soil, and natural ecosystems. Since 1912, systematic reforestation in these woods has been documented.

Among all softwood species, Douglas fir is exceptional since it is dimensionally stable by nature and can season well in place. It is a creamy yellow when freshly milled, but when it is exposed to light over time, it gradually darkens and turns red.

It has a remarkably straight grain and has become a favorite choice for timber framing and exposed beam construction due to the wide availability of large timbers. The lovely color of Doug fir and the ability to machine into exceptionally smooth pieces, make it a popular choice for interior and exterior trim, flooring, interior paneling, as well as siding. It also can hold all types of stains and finishes, including paint.

Douglas Fir Timbers

Doug fir is a great option for wood beams, interior and exterior trim, interior paneling, door casings, mantels, flooring, and other goods when both look and dimensional stability are crucial. It does not check or have an elevated grain when dried.

We may offer Doug fir timbers in practically any size or grade, with appearance grade being the most popular. These timbers are chosen for both aesthetic appeal and structural strength. We also have "free of heart" Doug fir timbers, which means they don't have the bull's eye heartwood that typically makes up the center of most beams. Compared to timbers containing heartwood, heartwood-free timbers are more stable and less prone to checking.

Your Douglas fir timbers can be delivered kiln-dried or surfaced on all four sides, if preferred.

The Classes of Douglas Fir

According to the Western Wood Products Association, the three fundamental classes of Douglas fir lumber are allocated based on visual examination and/or mechanical testing and represent the anticipated end uses.

Depending on how well it performs in load-bearing or load-carrying applications, structural timber for residential, commercial, and industrial usage is rated. The main criteria are the physical working qualities, with beauty coming in second. Usually, these items have the following grade stamping:

  • Registered trademark or logo of WWPA
  • Mill name or mill number identifying the origin of the product
  • Moisture content designation at the time of surfacing
  • Species or species combination
  • Grade name

Why Choose Douglas Fir?

Lumber destined for uses where appearance is the most essential aspect is given an appearance rating. These product categories include everything from the most beautiful to the most practical. They can be utilized for a number of tasks, marketed as selects, finish, or common boards, run-to-pattern for siding and paneling goods, etc.

Instead of being stamped on the timber, the grades of aesthetic items are frequently validated by written evidence. On the backside or ends of certain goods, the grade or identification may be stamped, however the highest grades are rarely imprinted to preserve the beauty of the wood.

In contrast to the structural grades, appearance timber is milled and graded using aesthetic standards as opposed to structural performance standards. The grade is influenced by several variables, including color, grain pattern, texture, knot type, and size.

Douglas Fir Categories

Factory and shop grades are given to timber mills and will be re-cut in order to recover the clear pieces that may be used to make other wood products including windows, doors, and cabinets as well as molding, trim, and specialty items.

Although each of these broad groups contains particular subcategories, practically all lumber grades fall inside them. Products made of Douglas fir are available in all three categories, and many of them come in particular grades and sizes designed for international markets.

To guarantee that these premium goods will satisfy the stringent dimensional stability criteria of finish carpenters, furniture producers, and cabinet builders, moisture content levels are meticulously managed in the highest grades. For many practical purposes, the less "perfect" grades offer a cost-effective option.
